HIST SECTION AWARD DESCRIPTIONS
The HIST Section gives out five awards, four of them annually: Best Book, Best Edited Book, Best Article and the Best Paper by a Graduate Student. Our Distinguished Scholar Award is given biennially. See below for more information on each.
Francesco Guicciardini Prize for Best Book in Historical International RelationsFrancesco Guicciardini (1483-1540) was an Italian historian and statesman who served in the Florentine and papal diplomatic services and was the author, among other works, of the landmark History of Italy (Storia d’Italia), a foundational work on statecraft and grand strategy which combined careful historical research with general theorizing about the ethics and practices of international behavior. The Francesco Guicciardini Prize is given annually and recognizes the best book copyrighted in the previous calendar year on subjects related to historical international relations. This year's prize (2025) will be open to books with a copyright of 2023 and 2024.
Historical International Relations Distinguished Scholar AwardThe HIST Section’s Distinguished Scholar Award recognizes an individual whose lifetime achievements in scholarship, teaching, and mentoring have made a significant impact on the field of Historical International Relations. The award is given on a biennial basis.

Joseph Fletcher Prize for Best Edited Book in Historical International RelationsJoseph F. Fletcher (1934-1984) was a historian who studied the interaction between Islamic, Mongol and Chinese worlds, a groundbreaker in the turn toward global history. The Joseph F. Fletcher award is given annually and recognizes the best edited book copyrighted in the previous calendar year on subjects related to historical international relations. This year's prize (2025) will be open to books published in 2023 and 2024.
Barbara W. Tuchman Prize for Best Paper in Historical International Relations by a Graduate StudentBarbara Tuchman (1912-1989) was a Pulitzer winning historian whose expertise ranged from 14th century France to the World Wars of the 20th century. The award recognizes an outstanding paper presented at the previous ISA Annual Convention by a graduate student.
Merze Tate Prize for Best Article on Historical International Relations
Merze Tate (1905-1996) was a diplomatic historian and scholar of geopolitics and foreign policy. The Merze Tate Prize is given annually and recognizes the best article published in the previous year on subjects related to historical international relations. This year's prize (2025) will be open to articles published between 1 July 2023 and 30 June 2024.
